Few families could match the power of the Vadaya family during the high days of merchant rule. Lady Vadaya commissioned an elaborate portrait of herself, only to have it stolen out from under her nose and replaced with a fake. Unwilling to lose face, the Vadayas accused the rival Mizh family of orchestrating the theft, pitting the two houses against one another to this very day.
